God’s Purpose For Studying His Word - part 8
2 Timothy 2:15
“15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
Much more could be said on the importance of ‘rightly dividing the word of truth’. Paying attention to the context is very important. It is not right to simply do a word search assuming that a word will always have the same meaning and because the same word is found in different places, they must always mean the same thing. Rightly dividing will require first of all a saved person which the Bible calls a spiritual man. It will require that this spiritual man walk as a spiritual man, in humility, disciplining himself to looking at the context and being careful not to read into the passage what he wants it to say. There is a need to learn how to rightly divide the word of truth. Spending time under the instruction of a godly man and then putting to use the things being taught and receiving correction where needed and growing and learning. This is called discipleship.
This is just one example of how people do not rightly divide the word of truth. It is important to remember that in Bible study, we are studying God’s Word. It is not just the words of men. It is the Word of God. Humility is of great importance in the study of God’s Word
It is important to note that God’s Word is the “word of truth.”
John 17:17
“17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
It is important to keep in mind that the Bible does not just contain the word of truth. It is the word of truth. The passage we are studying does not limit the truth to certain verses or passages. All of God’s Word is truth. God gives many warnings in His Word. All of those warnings are the word of truth. God reveals the sinful nature of man in many places in the Bible. God does not want us to follow that way, but it is still all truth. It is important to listen to what God has to say and to understand the need of a Saviour in order to be able to know His peace and joy in our hearts now. Jesus Christ is the only Saviour and He came to seek and to save that which was lost. All people are born lost. All people need Jesus Christ as their Saviour. To trust in Jesus Christ for salvation is to be given a new nature. A nature that can know God’s peace and joy. A nature that can and will benefit from the milk and the meat of God’s Word.
