Identity of a Christian - part 9
1 Peter 2:1-10
v.7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
Peter is directed by God to speak very plainly and to cover every angle so that there is no room for doubt and certainly no room for argument. To the born again Christian, Jesus Christ is precious. We have the privilege now to bow before God and to cry out as Thomas did in John 20:28:
John 20:28
“28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.”
We can also cry out with Mary:
John 20:16
“16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.”
The song writer wrote:
“I have found a friend in Jesus, He’s everything to me, He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul,”
Truly every born again Christian can agree with what the Scriptures say of Jesus Christ and also what the song writer says. God directed the apostle Peter to write: “unto you therefore which believe he is precious”. There can be no doubt about this. There can be no argument about this. He is precious to those who are saved. As we consider this fact, we can see again why it is so foreign to the new nature to be lusting after the things of this world. The world is truly the enemy of the child of God. We have been given something so much greater and so much better.
Verse 7 continues on to talk of those who are disobedient. This refutes Calvinism. It is not possible to be disobedient if there is no option to obey. The Scriptures make it clear that God wants all to come to repentance. Not just some, but all. He is calling all to come to repentance, not just some, but all. Yet there are those who are disobedient. Here is a good lesson for us in this life. When a child does not listen and do what the parent says, the child is disobedient. It is not a light thing. It is not something that should be ignored. It is something that should be addressed properly. This will help the child to see the importance of obeying God’s call of salvation.
